Substantial maturity influence on carbon and hydrogen isotopic composition of n-alkanes in sedimentary rocks

چکیده
Carbon (?13C) and hydrogen (?2H) compound-specific isotope analyses on sedimentary hydrocarbons are widely used for ecological reconstructions oil-source rock or oil-oil correlations. However, the effects of thermal alteration isotopic composition not fully understood, potentially imparting a bias interpretation older more mature sequences. We measured ?13C ?2H n-alkanes in 23 extracted bitumens from 1.64 Ga Paleoproterozoic Barney Creek Formation southern McArthur Basin, Australia. The samples cover wide range maturities with calculated vitrinite reflectance (Rc) values 0.4% to 1.3%. Our results illustrate that while kerogen remains relatively constant, have strong positive correlation maturity. Average ?13Calk increase by 6.8‰ ?2Halk 69‰ among analysed maturity range. At same time, carbon offset between (??13Calk–ker) climbs 1.3‰ 8.5‰ increasing Therefore, substantial influence stable isotopes must be considered palaeoecological petroleum studies. In initial stages maturation, display increasingly “isotope slopes” plots against number. further slopes became negative. slope inversion indicates dominant mechanisms n-alkane generation degradation changed during progression early diagenesis metagenesis. Numerical models suggest formation negative may driven balance their subsequent degradation, dependence rate constant k chain length.

Stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic fractionation of individual n-alkanes accompanying biodegradation: evidence from a group of progressively biodegraded oils
Seven crude oils of known source and maturity, representing a natural sequence of increasing degree of biodegradation, were collected from reservoirs in the Liaohe Basin, NE China, in an effort to determine the magnitude and direction of isotopic shift of carbon and hydrogen in individual n-alkanes during microbial degradation. The results show that biodegradation has little effect on the carbo...

متن کاملSedimentation and Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks are one component of the modern threefold classification of rocks. They derive from the lithification of sediments, which are produced in basically two ways: by the mechanical deposition of grains derived from the alteration of other rocks (detrital or clastic rocks), or as chemical precipitates or grains formed organically or inorganically from an aqueous solution. The whole ...
متن کاملCarbon–sulfur–iron relationships in sedimentary rocks from southwestern Taiwan: influence of geochemical environment on greigite and pyrrhotite formation
The importance of the magnetic iron sulfide minerals, greigite (Fe3S4) and pyrrhotite (Fe7S8), is often underappreciated in geochemical studies because they are metastable with respect to pyrite (FeS2). Based on magnetic properties and X-ray diffraction analysis, previous studies have reported widespread occurrences of these magnetic minerals along with magnetite (Fe3O4) in two thick Plio-Pleis...
